Adam Brody became a household name thanks to his role as Seth Cohen in The O.C., but despite his teen idol status, he also won over audiences with his performance in the hit Netflix series Nobody Wants This. As rumors of a possible O.C. reboot started circulating, sources close to Brody made it clear that the Gilmore Girls alum had no interest in revisiting the beloved series.
According to an insider, Brody was the first to reject the idea of a reboot, with other cast members soon following suit. In a conversation with Life & Style, the source revealed that Brody turned down a lucrative offer to return to the show. “During the early days of the pandemic, there were discussions about bringing back The O.C., featuring the original stars as adults alongside a new generation of SoCal high schoolers,” the insider shared.
However, Brody was reportedly adamant about not reviving the series and even convinced O.C. creator Josh Schwartz to abandon the idea. “It’s rare to see this kind of thing happen, especially now, but it became widely known that Adam and Josh walked away from a significant amount of money to protect the legacy of the original mid-2000s show,” the source added. The decision ultimately worked in Brody’s favor, as he went on to star in a successful Netflix series alongside Kristen Bell.
On the Welcome to The O.C. podcast, Brody previously expressed his doubts about a reboot, saying, “I kind of don’t think it can be done because I feel like, socially, we’re in a different place. I think we’re in a more conscious place.”
The original series, which ran for four seasons on Fox, also starred Rachel Bilson, Ben McKenzie, Mischa Barton, Melinda Clarke, and Peter Gallagher. Brody’s character, Seth Cohen, was the romantic interest of Bilson’s character, Summer Roberts, making them one of the show’s most iconic couples.
While The O.C. remains a fan favorite, Brody’s decision to leave it in the past seems to have paid off, as Nobody Wants This continues to stream successfully on Netflix.
