Usher recently shared a surprising revelation about his near-casting in Dreamgirls, the iconic 2006 musical film that starred Jennifer Hudson. During an appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show, Usher explained why he ultimately didn’t appear in the film, much to Hudson’s surprise.
He recalled seeing Hudson’s audition tape for Dreamgirls, which he knew she was preparing for, and mentioned that at the time, he was balancing a busy tour schedule. Unfortunately, this timing conflict prevented him from joining the project. Usher didn’t specify which role he was meant to play but had been slated to portray C.C. White, the brother of Hudson’s character Effie. This role eventually went to Keith Robinson.
Usher expressed that he had been eager to make it work and would have loved to be part of the film’s legacy. He added that while he didn’t get to be in Dreamgirls, he was proud to celebrate Hudson’s achievements, particularly her Academy Award win for Best Supporting Actress. The two stars bonded over their mutual respect, and Hudson joked that perhaps they could collaborate on a duet in the future. Usher was enthusiastic about the idea, agreeing that it would be great to work together someday.
