‘Well done India!’ says PM Modi as vaccination number touches 86 lakh on Monday

The NDA governed states topped the vaccination charts on Monday with Madhya Pradesh vaccinating 16.01 lakh doses.

India administered about 85.96 lakh doses of vaccines on Tuesday, the highest single-day record since the start of the vaccination drive in the country. The rate of vaccination more than doubled on June 21 which was also the first day of the restart of centralised procurement of vaccines. The development comes after it was reported on Sunday that the vaccine makers have increased production capacity to provide 13.5 crore doses across the country during the month of July.

The high rate of vaccination against COVID-19 was appreciated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi who took to microblogging site Twitter to congratulate the frontline workers and those who got vaccinated.

According to the Cowin portal, 85,96,807 doses of vaccines were given across the country on Monday out of which 78,09,771 people were given the first dose while the remaining 7,87,036 got the second dose to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

The new vaccine procurement policy also kicked in from Monday under which the central government procures 75% of vaccine doses produced and distributes it to the states. The new policy was announced by PM Modi in his address to the nation which entitles every citizen above the age of 18 to get vaccinated for free at government centres.

The remaining 25% of vaccine doses can be procured by private hospitals that can only take a service of Rs 150 (in addition to the vaccine’s cost) for the purpose of vaccination.

The NDA governed states topped the vaccination charts on Monday with Madhya Pradesh vaccinating 16.01 lakh doses followed by Karnataka (10.86 lakh), UP (6.90 lakh), Gujarat (5.05 lakh), Bihar (4.88 lakh) and Haryana(4.80 lakh). Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Assam were next on the list, administering 4.35 lakh, 3.80 lakh, 3.41 lakh and 3.39 lakh doses respectively.

The higher number of vaccine doses made available to the states coupled with an increased number of free vaccination centres available are seen as the factors behind the record-breaking pace. Government sources told The Indian Express that 2.95 crore doses were made available and the free vaccination centres numbered more than 80,000 on Monday. No separation between those below and above 45 years of age and the option for on-site registration also seems to have helped.
