What causes dark circles under your eyes

Dark circles under the eyes are prevalent for both men and women. Dark circles make your face look dull and, at times, even make you look older than you are. Worst of all, they don’t go away quickly.

One of the most common explanations for dark circles is fatigue, but apart from that, various other factors cause dark circles.

Causes of dark circles:

Fatigue

Staying up late, oversleeping, or extreme fatigue can cause dark circles. Sleep deprivation makes your skin look dull and pale, as a result of which the dark tissues and blood vessels beneath your skin begin to show up. Lack of sleep also causes fluid to build underneath your eyes which makes them look puffy.

Age

Another prevalent cause of dark circles is natural aging. As your age increases, the skin under your eyes gets thinner because you lose the fat and collagen needed to maintain skin elasticity. The blood vessels beneath your skin become more visible, causing the area below your eyes to darken.

Eyestrain

Staring at television or computer screens for long hours can cause blood vessels around your eyes to enlarge, resulting in the skin around your eyes darkening.

Dehydration

When your skin is not able to receive the proper amount of water, the skin beneath your eyes begins to look dull.

Sun overexposure

Overexposure to the sun leads to excess production of melanin. Too much sun causes pigmentation around your eyes, because of which the surrounding skin darkens.

Treatment for dark circles:

Apply a cold compress: Applying a cold compress helps in reducing swelling and shrinking dilated blood vessels which reduce the appearance of puffiness and help in eliminating dark circles. For this, you can wrap a few ice cubes in a clean cotton cloth and apply them to your eyes.

Get proper sleep: Having sound sleep also helps in reducing dark circles. Have at least 8 hours of sleep to prevent fatigue which causes dark circles.

Proper sleeping position: At times, your sleeping position also causes dark circles. Elevate your head with a few pillows to prevent fluid from pooling under your eyes which can make them look puffy and swollen.

Soak with tea bags: Applying cold tea bags to your eyes can improve their appearance. Tea contains caffeine and antioxidants that help stimulate blood circulation, shrink your blood vessels, and reduce liquid retention beneath your skin.
