What do India, Australia, and South Africa need to reach the World Test Championship final?

With 15 Tests left in the current World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, no team is assured of a place in the final, leaving South Africa, Sri Lanka, India, Australia, and others to compete for the top two spots.

South Africa stands at 59.26%, needing to win three of their remaining four matches to secure a spot without relying on other results. Even if they draw one series, a favorable combination of results from Sri Lanka, India, and Australia could still ensure their qualification. Sri Lanka, at 50%, must win all three of their remaining Tests to reach 61.54% and guarantee their place in the final. However, any slip-ups would leave them dependent on other teams’ performances.

New Zealand, also at 50%, faces a tough road to qualification with only two matches left. Their maximum possible percentage of 57.14 requires favorable outcomes in other series, including draws or losses for India, Australia, South Africa, and Sri Lanka.

India, leading at 61.11%, has a strong chance to make the final. Winning all four Tests in their ongoing series against Australia would solidify their spot. However, even with fewer wins, India could qualify if other teams falter. Australia, at 57.69%, needs at least four wins and a draw from their last six matches to ensure qualification without relying on other results. A strong performance in the away series against Sri Lanka could be pivotal.

Pakistan, at 33.33%, and England, at 43.75%, have slim mathematical chances of qualifying but need nearly all results to fall in their favor. Both teams must win their remaining matches and hope for significant underperformance from the top contenders.

With teams like Bangladesh and West Indies already out of the race, the competition intensifies among the leading contenders, each requiring a mix of strong performances and favorable results to secure a spot in the WTC final.
