What happened to Scarlet Witch? Marvel’s Scarlet Witch mystery, explained!

Marvel has finally revealed the shocking truth about Scarlet Witch!

For all the die-hard Scarlet Witch fans who refused to believe Wanda Maximoff was truly gone—despite Agatha All Along trying to convince us otherwise—your patience has finally paid off! Marvel has just spilled the truth about what actually happened to her after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and let’s just say, things are way more complicated than we thought. In fact, her story might not be over yet, and we could see her return in next year’s Avengers: Doomsday!

Even though Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff was a major player in Phase Four of the MCU—thanks to WandaVision and Doctor Strange 2—many fans were disappointed that her character didn’t have a bigger role in the Multiverse Saga. A lot of people are still upset that the filmmakers seemingly killed off such a powerful and influential character. (Especially in a movie where John Krasinski’s Reed Richards got wiped out in five minutes!) But guess what? Turns out Wanda isn’t dead after all. And for that, we have none other than the TVA to thank!

How do we know Wanda is alive?

Here’s where things get wild—her survival wasn’t revealed in a movie or Disney+ series but in a Marvel comic. The TVA comic book series, which ties into MCU continuity while also bringing in elements from the broader Marvel comics universe, has now confirmed Wanda’s fate.

The series follows the Time Variance Authority after the events of Loki, featuring familiar faces like Mobius, Sylvie, and Hunter B-15, along with multiversal variants like Spider-Gwen (aka Ghost-Spider), Captain Carter, and Gambit. In TVA #3, a mysterious psychological illness called “the Madness” is spreading across the multiverse. To track down the source, Gwen takes a dreamlike walk through the TVA’s archives and stumbles upon something shocking: a long-forgotten department hidden deep within the TVA.

On the final page of the comic, we see what’s inside the Department of Deferment—and it’s none other than the MCU’s Scarlet Witch, kept in stasis! Her design is identical to how she looked in Multiverse of Madness, and the comic’s writer, Katharyn Blair (who also worked on Loki), clearly intended this as a direct connection to the MCU. Even the comic’s artist, Pere Pérez, confirmed on Instagram that this is Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch variant.

What does this mean for the future of the MCU?

This revelation suggests that the TVA stepped in at the last second, pulling Wanda from the timeline before Mount Wundagore collapsed on her. That would mean she never actually died—she was just removed from reality and stored away like a forgotten file in the TVA’s archives.

With Deadpool & Wolverine reinforcing how important the TVA is to the current Multiverse Saga, it’s entirely possible they’ll play a role in Avengers: Doomsday as well. If that happens, Wanda could finally make her grand return. Imagine Mobius warning the Avengers that Doctor Doom is coming and that the only way to stop him is by bringing Wanda back into the fight.

Could we see Scarlet Witch rejoin Earth’s Mightiest Heroes next year? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure—Marvel just cracked open the door for one of the MCU’s most powerful characters to make a comeback in a major way.

TVA #3 is out now, with issue #4 dropping in March, and the final issue set for release on April 30.
