What Is Matt Damon’s Role in Tom Holland and Zendaya Starrer The Odyssey?

Christopher Nolan is back at it again, cooking up another cinematic masterpiece, and this time, he’s taking on one of the greatest adventure stories ever told—The Odyssey. As expected, he’s bringing along a powerhouse cast, and the latest reveal has fans buzzing: Matt Damon is set to play Odysseus, the legendary Greek hero.

Universal Pictures made the big announcement on Monday, sharing a first-look image of Damon in character. This sneak peek offers a glimpse into what promises to be an epic, visually stunning journey, helmed by the visionary director behind Oppenheimer and Interstellar.

But Damon isn’t the only A-lister on board. The cast is absolutely stacked, featuring Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, and Lupita Nyong’o in key roles. Adding even more star power, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, Benny Safdie, and Jon Bernthal have also joined the ensemble. Meanwhile, Elliot Page, Himesh Patel, Bill Irwin, Samantha Morton, and Mia Goth round out the impressive lineup, making this one of Nolan’s most ambitious projects to date.

A Grand Myth Brought to Life in IMAX

Universal officially confirmed The Odyssey shortly before Christmas, following months of exciting casting announcements. The film is being described as a “mythic action epic” that will be shot across the world using groundbreaking IMAX film technology—meaning audiences can expect breathtaking visuals and a truly immersive experience.

This marks Nolan’s second collaboration with Universal after the massive success of Oppenheimer, which was his first project with the studio after parting ways with Warner Bros. in 2020.

For those unfamiliar with the source material, The Odyssey is based on Homer’s legendary poem, which follows Odysseus’ perilous 10-year journey back home to Ithaca after the Trojan War. Along the way, he faces divine wrath, mythical beasts, and countless obstacles. Meanwhile, back home, his wife Penelope and son Telemachus struggle to fend off suitors eager to take his place.

With a July 17, 2026 release date, this film is shaping up to be an unmissable cinematic event. Expect Nolan’s signature storytelling, mind-blowing visuals, and a fresh take on one of the greatest adventures ever written.
