Who is the Chiefs’ backup quarterback?

The Kansas City Chiefs are set to begin their playoff run on Saturday, facing off against the Houston Texans at home in the AFC Divisional round. With a 15-2 regular-season record, the Chiefs enter as the No. 1 overall seed in the AFC and should be well-rested after a first-round bye. They are eyeing another Super Bowl appearance, aiming to win three straight titles.

Houston, on the other hand, advanced to the divisional round by defeating the Chargers 32-12 in the first round, making it to this stage for the second consecutive season.

A key focus for the Chiefs is their starting quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, who dealt with a mild high-ankle sprain earlier in the season. Mahomes left the Chiefs’ Week 15 victory over the Browns in the fourth quarter but returned for the following two games. He sat out the Week 18 matchup against Denver, and staying healthy will be crucial for the Chiefs’ Super Bowl aspirations.

Chiefs Quarterback Depth Chart

  • 1st: Patrick Mahomes
  • 2nd: Carson Wentz
  • 3rd: Chris Oladokun (Practice Squad)

Backup Quarterback: Carson Wentz

Carson Wentz, the Chiefs’ backup quarterback, joined the team in April 2024. He has only seen action in two games for Kansas City — stepping in for Mahomes during the Week 15 game against the Browns and starting in the Week 18 game against the Broncos. Here are his stats for the season:

  • Completion %: 63.2%
  • Pass Yards: 118
  • Touchdowns: 0
  • Interceptions: 0
  • Sacks: 4

Wentz has had a rollercoaster NFL career. He was drafted No. 2 overall by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2016. After a promising start to the 2017 season, Wentz tore his ACL in Week 14, and the Eagles went on to win Super Bowl 52 with backup Nick Foles leading the charge. Despite a back injury in 2018, Wentz returned to start for the Eagles but struggled in the subsequent seasons. He had a mixed tenure with the Colts and Commanders, with notable ups and downs. He spent 2023 with the Rams, appearing in one game when they rested their starters ahead of the playoffs.

Aside from Mahomes and Wentz, the only other quarterback on the Chiefs’ roster is Chris Oladokun, who is currently on the practice squad. Oladokun was a seventh-round pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2022 from South Dakota State.

With Mahomes leading the charge and Wentz ready as a backup, the Chiefs are geared up for a deep playoff run.
