Why is Republic Day celebrated in India?

The entire nation will be lit up in tricolor to celebrate the 72nd Indian Republic Day on 26th January 2021. The country got its Independence on 15th August 1947 from British rule. After which a constituent assembly was formed to make the Constitution of India under the Chairmanship of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. The draft was ready by February of 1948 but it was formally adopted on January 26, 1950, thereby declaring India in the preamble of the constitution as a Sovereign Socialist Secular Democratic Republic.

This day also holds historical significance for the country. Two most important things happened on this day: Jawaharlal Nehru got elected as the President of the Indian National Congress and ‘Poorna Swaraj’ meaning ‘Complete Independence’ was declared.

On this auspicious day, the flag is hoisted by the President on the Rajpath of Delhi followed by the Indian National Army’s parade.
