Why James Mangold Does Not Want To Be ‘Handcuffed’ To A Lot Of Lore With Star Wars Prequel?

The excitement for Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi, a highly anticipated prequel, is reaching new heights among fans. Directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker James Mangold, who also co-wrote the screenplay, the project promises to bring something fresh to the Star Wars universe.

In an interview with MovieWeb, Mangold shared that the film will explore the origin of The Force in a way that is original and not overly reliant on the established lore from previous Star Wars installments. He emphasized that the key for him was the creative freedom to craft something new, alongside screenwriter Beau Willimon.

Mangold revealed that the movie will take place 25,000 years before any of the current Star Wars films, offering a vast and unexplored time period that has always intrigued him. He described it as a “playground” he’s been eager to delve into since his teenage years.

The director also expressed his desire to break free from the constraints of too much established lore. He explained that he didn’t want the story to be so tied down by existing canon that it became impossible to please anyone, noting that the goal is to create something that feels new and exciting.

The project was first announced at the 2023 Star Wars Celebration in London and is said to be inspired by the 2012 comic book series, which explores the origins of the Jedi Order. Mangold’s collaboration with Willimon was confirmed in April, though fans will have to remain patient as the release date for the film has not yet been set.
