When India was under the British rule, the British Government introduced police officers to maintain peace & control the civilian movements. The colour of the Police uniform was White. White colour was a colour of nobles & was deeply attached to Britishers. But there was a fault, the White colour uniforms used to get dirty easily & cleanliness was necessary for Britishers. So many police officers started to dye their uniforms with different colours, in order to avoid them from getting dirty. This resulted in multicoloured uniforms, which were hard to recognize.

Sir Henry Lawrence was the Governor’s agent of North- West frontier. He raised the ‘Corps of Guide Force’ at Lahore in the year 1846. His officers faced the same problem of white colour uniform. Henry saw an officer with a uniform dyed in Khaki colour. Khaki colour is dark but not too dark & can easily cover the dirt on the uniform. After noticing the qualities of Khaki colour, In 1847, Sir Henry Lawrence declared Khaki to be used as the official colour for Police Uniforms. The khaki colour dye was prepared with tea leaves but now it is made using synthetic colours. It is a mixture of light Brown & Yellow colours.

In India all the Police officers as well as the Central Reserve Police Force ( CRPF)  officers wear Khaki colours uniforms.
