Nicole Kidman took on a daring role in Halina Reijn’s erotic thriller Babygirl, delivering a performance filled with sensual intensity. While her casting was a shock to many, it was an even bigger source of anxiety for the film’s director.
In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Reijn reflected on the casting process and admitted that instead of celebrating when Kidman signed onto the project, she woke up the next morning filled with panic. The Oscar-winning actress plays Romy, a powerful CEO who embarks on a passionate and complex affair with a much younger intern, portrayed by Harris Dickinson.
Reijn’s main concern wasn’t Kidman’s ability to embody the role—she knew the Big Little Lies star would be brilliant. Rather, she worried about finding a male lead who could match Kidman’s presence on screen. “I thought, ‘How are we ever going to find someone who can be her equal, much less dominate her?’” she admitted.
However, after watching Dickinson’s performances in Triangle of Sadness and Beach Rats, Reijn realized he possessed the rare blend of qualities needed for the role—youthful energy mixed with an authoritative presence. “He had the boy and the man in one. The father and the child in one person. Even his height mattered because I needed someone who could handle her physically,” she explained. Although Dickinson had doubts about his ability to take on such a demanding role, Reijn had no hesitation in casting him.
Kidman, for her part, was full of praise for her co-star, calling him a “brilliant” actor and an incredible scene partner. “I know he’s going to be a massive star,” she predicted.
Babygirl had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, where Kidman’s performance earned her the Best Actress award. She later secured a Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in 2025. Reflecting on the honor, Kidman expressed her gratitude and deep connection to her character. “I love Romy. So for her to be recognized, it’s like she’s been given a hug,” she said.
