‘Wicked’ has already been shortlisted for 4 Oscars

Wicked is making waves ahead of the 97th Academy Awards, as it lands multiple mentions in the Oscars shortlists, including nods for Best Original Score, Best Sound, Best Visual Effects, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling. The musical’s popularity and established Broadway roots made it a strong contender in these technical categories, and its chances of securing official nominations in these areas seem promising.

While the shortlists have revealed these four categories, it’s still unclear whether Wicked will be nominated for major awards like Best Picture or Best Actress(es). However, the performances of Cynthia Erivo (Elphaba) and Ariana Grande (Glinda) have been gaining recognition, with both actresses receiving nominations for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress at the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards. These accolades are important early indicators for potential Oscar nominations.

Although Wicked received four mentions, it was outpaced by the French crime drama Emilia Pérez, starring Selena Gomez, which garnered six mentions across various categories. Other big names like Joker: Folie à Deux and Gladiator II also made a strong showing in the shortlists, with Gladiator II receiving multiple mentions, including Best Visual Effects and Best Sound.

As the Oscars race heats up, Wicked continues to build momentum, bolstered by its growing buzz online and during its press tour. Fans are eagerly awaiting the official nominee announcements on January 17, 2025, with the 2025 Oscars ceremony scheduled for March 3, hosted by Conan O’Brien.
