After defeating the Argentine duo of Guillermo Duran and Tomas Etcheverry, India’s Rohan Bopanna and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden qualified for the second round of the Wimbledon men’s doubles tournament.
The Indo-Australian tennis pair, seeded sixth at the grass court Grand Slam, defeated the unseeded Argentine duo 6-2,6-7,7-6 in their first round match on Friday night, lasting two hours and 12 minutes.
The 43-year-old Bopanna and Ebden, who won two ATP Tour doubles championships earlier this year, will take on the unseeded British duo of Jacob Fearnley and Johannus Monday in the second round on Sunday.
Bopanna-Ebden, on the other hand, won the Qatar Open in February and the ATP Masters 1000 Indian Wells title in March.
Aside from the men’s doubles, Bopanna is also competing in the mixed doubles at Wimbledon, where he will take on Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski on Saturday.
The sixth-seeded Bopanna and Dabrowski, who won the French Open mixed doubles title in 2017, will begin their campaign against Croatia’s Ivan Dodig and Chinese Taipei’s Latisha Chan.
Yuki Bhambri and Saketh Myneni, two Indian tennis players, will also begin their men’s doubles campaign on Saturday. The two Indians, who entered Wimbledon as alternates at the last minute, will take on Adrian Mannarino of France and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain in the first round.
On Saturday, another Indian duo, Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and N. Sriram Balaji, will begin their men’s doubles campaign. The Indian duo are up against second seeds Austin Krajicek and Ivan Dodig after making the main draw as alternates.
