Yami Gautam reacts to being called a ‘nationalist actor’; says she focuses on stories that matter

At the trailer launch of her upcoming film Haq, Yami Gautam addressed being labelled a “nationalist actor” and said she prefers to focus on meaningful stories rather than public tags.

Yami Gautam, known for her strong and impactful roles in films like Article 370, Uri: The Surgical Strike and A Thursday, recently shared her thoughts on being called a “nationalist actor.” The actor was speaking at the trailer launch of her next film, Haq, when she was asked about the label that some have associated with her recent film choices.

Responding with calm humour, Yami said she wasn’t even aware of such a tag. “Label hai, mujhe pata bhi nahi hai. People will always have something to say if not this, then something else. Earlier I was called underrated, then something else. These things keep changing,” she said with a smile.

Explaining her approach to work, Yami said she chooses stories that have depth and relevance. “The opportunities I’m getting allow me to tell stories that have their own identity and importance. We could’ve made documentaries, but we work in entertainment it’s about connecting people across audiences, from tier 1 to tier 3 cities, and bringing something fresh every time,” she shared.

Yami also added that she respects her audience’s opinions. “If you like the story, it’s a good film. If you see it differently, that’s fine too. The audience has never labelled me; I work for them,” she said.
Yami was last seen in Dhoom Dhaam alongside Pratik Gandhi. Her upcoming film Haq, co-starring Emraan Hashmi and directed by Suparn S Varma, is inspired by the 1985 Shah Bano case and will release on November 7.
