On the first day of the Mubadala Citi Open in Washington, Chinese tennis player Yibing Wu collapsed during the game after leading 4-1 in his first-round match against Japan’s Yosuke Watanuki on Court 5. The incident occurred only a few weeks after the 23-year-old suffered an alarming situation during his 2023 Wimbledon opener against Frances Tiafoe.
The incident occurred at the end of the fifth game. He collapsed at the changeover in front of the ball boy after losing his balance on his way to his chair. Two guys came in and attempted to assist him, but the youngster did not appear to be in good enough health to stand on his own. He was finally forced to withdraw, meaning that his opponent Watanuk, 25, advanced to the tournament’s second round in Washington.

Prior to this month, he had suffered from a breathing problem during his first-round Wimbledon match against Tiafoe and medical assistance was requested on the court. He had collapsed and had to be taken off the court for medical treatment, but he had afterwards resumed his match after being declared fit to continue. He eventually lost the match 6-7, 3-6, 4-6.
