Actor Zareen Khan recently made headlines not for a film, but for her fiery and intelligent takedown of a troll on Instagram. When a user commented “Shaadi kar lo, buddhi ho rahi ho” on one of her posts, Zareen didn’t stay silent. Instead, she delivered a powerful response that tackled deep-rooted societal norms with clarity and wit.
Rather than brushing off the ageist remark, Zareen chose to highlight the harmful mindset that treats marriage as a cure for ageing or life’s supposed shortcomings. She questioned why, in Indian households, “Shaadi karwa do” becomes the default advice for anyone seen as aimless or independent. “If someone can’t take care of themselves, adding another person to the chaos won’t fix anything, it might just ruin two lives instead of one,” she stated.
She also called out how women’s growing independence is still viewed as a threat. “If a girl starts becoming too independent or opinionated, families panic and say, ‘She’s slipping out of our hands.’ And again, the solution is get her married.”
Zareen ended her response with a reality check, “Is marriage some kind of magic? From what I see, most marriages today barely last two or three months. So no, marriage is not the answer to every problem.”Her response struck a chord with fans, many of whom applauded her for speaking out against regressive thinking.
