Zidane steps down as Real Madrid head coach for the second time. Zidane returned to Real Madrid two years ago in 2019 for a second stint in charge and won La Liga in 2020. Zinedine Zidane has won three Champions League as Real Madrid head coach. The Frenchman has stepped down on his second spell in charge of the La Liga club, he has led Real Madrid to two league titles and three Champions League Victories since 2015.
Zidane informed club directors and the first-team squad regarding his decision on Wednesday and he is currently at Real’s Valdebebas training complex finalising the details of his departure. He resigns after Real Madrid was defeated by their city rivals Atletico Madrid on the league title at the weekend.
Real Madrid finished La Liga in the second spot of the points table behind Atletico and was knocked out of the Champions League at the semi-final stage and the Copa del Rey in the round of 32 to end the season without a trophy for the first time in 11 years.
The club stated that Zidane was one of the great myths of Real Madrid and his legend goes beyond what he had been as a coach and player of the club. Club added that he knew that he is at the heart of Real Madrid and that Real Madrid will always be his home.
