15 hydrogen based fuel cell buses ordered by Tata Motors from Indian Oil

An order for 15 hydrogen-based fuel cell busses has been bagged by Tata Motors from the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), as said by the company on Wednesday. In December 2020, the bids for the supply of the hydrogen-based proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell buses were been invited by the Indian Oil Corporation Limited, as noted by the auto major.

As further added by Tata Motors, from the date of signing of the memorandum of understanding (MOU), all the ordered 15 buses shall be delivered within 144 weeks.

As mentioned in a statement by Tata Motors, To undertake projects along with collectively studying further the potential of fuel cell technology for commercial vehicles, in addition to supplying the buses, the automaker shall also collaborate with Indian Oil Corporation Limited’s Research and Development Center.

For public transport in real-world conditions in Delhi NCR, the above mentioned shall be done by jointly maintaining testing and operating these buses along with refuelling them by hydrogen and shall be generated and dispensed by Indian Oil Corporation Limited.

According to Tata motors president (commercial vehicle business unit) Girish Wagh, Under FAME I, the company has successfully supplied 215 EV buses and has won orders for over 600 EV busses under FAME II, while the national efforts towards ushering in the hydrogen economy for various applications along with mobility has been pioneered by the Oil major as mentioned by SM Vaidya, Indian Oil Corporation Limited Chairman.

To take the hydrogen and fuel cell technology to the next level, the first of its kind project in the nation is bringing the country’s largest fuel supplier along with the largest commercial vehicle manufacturer on board for the same.
