23rd Far East Film Festival: Hybrid edition pays tribute to Eddie Garcia

The festival opens with an in-person and on-site screening of Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou’s lush spy thriller ‘Cliff Walkers’ .

The 23rd Edition of the Far East Film Festival returns, this time as a Hybrid edition, allowing for attendees to view films on-site virtually and certain films in-person at its hometown in Udine, Northern Italy. The Festival will be screening a total of 63 feature films from 11 countries. The specialty event which brings together art house and popular cinema of Asia to Europe will make most of the debut hybrid mode as Italy moves towards loosening restrictions that were brought in during the Pandemic.

The 23rd edition also honors legendary Filipino actor and director Eddie Garcia, who passed away in 2019, as part of its Director Focus which will be screening four of the late director’s feature films. The focus of the festival is also on Korean writer-director Yoon Jong-bin. The festival will also feature Ties That Bind, the Asia-Europe co-production workshop; Focus Asia, the industry-related initiative; and the popular Far East Film Festival Campus Film Journalism School, which is run by veteran reporter Matthew Scott.

The 2019 edition of the festival was held completely virtually due to the restrictions laid by the Covid-19 pandemic. This year, the organizers of the Far East Film Festival say that there will be a total of five screens and an open-air cinema on the Visionario lawn which will be used for screening all titles, giving opportunity for almost 400 cinema patrons to enjoy the cinematic art while maintaining their safety amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The festival is set to open June 24 and close on July 2.
