Vishal Tyagi reveals Dhurandhar The Revenge avoided CGI for blasts; used 500 litres of petrol for climax scene

Aditya Dhar’s action film Dhurandhar: The Revenge is drawing attention not just for its scale but for the way its explosive sequences were executed. Months after its release in March, new details from the film’s special effects team are shedding light on the intense effort that went into creating its action set pieces.

In a recent interaction, SFX supervisor Vishal Tyagi revealed that the film relied entirely on real explosions instead of computer-generated effects. This approach was particularly evident in the climactic sequence featuring Ranveer Singh and Arjun Rampal, where a massive blast was created using nearly 500 litres of petrol.

According to Vishal, director Aditya Dhar was clear from the start that he wanted authenticity in the action scenes. While industry practice often involves smaller blasts later enhanced with CGI, the team chose to execute everything practically. The final tanker explosion proved to be the most challenging, not only due to its scale but also because of safety concerns.

Vishal shared that careful planning was required to ensure the flames remained controlled, especially with Ranveer positioned close to the blast. The actor followed precise instructions and maintained composure throughout, placing complete trust in the team’s preparation. Arjun Rampal, who was initially part of the shot, was asked to step away before filming the explosion as a precaution.

The sequence was built using real train bases and containers, adding to its realism. Despite production suggesting a smaller quantity of fuel, Vishal pushed for a larger setup to achieve the desired visual impact, even incorporating additional explosives to enhance the effect. After the shoot, the team stayed back to witness the result, with Ranveer praising the execution, marking a memorable moment for the crew.
