Jose Mourinho has explained why he went to Cristiano Ronaldo’s home after Real Madrid was eliminated from the 2011-12 UEFA Champions League semifinals.
After the passionate Portuguese was fired from Roma, a documentary about him was released on Amazon Prime. Mourinho goes into vivid detail about ‘a defeat that was much more than that.’
The former Real Madrid manager recounts the 2012 Champions League semifinal match between his club, Los Blancos, and eventual winners, Bayern Munich. Real lost 1-3 in a penalty shootout against the Bavarians.
Mourinho stated that the loss was one of the most devastating of his career and that it caused him to cry as he drove home.
“Yes, I cried,” Mourinho admits when reminded of the game. He added, “Of course I didn’t do it on the pitch or in the dressing room, but it did happen on the way home”.
The Portuguese also recalls that after the match, his agent, Jorge Mendes, called to let him know that his player, Cristiano Ronaldo, was devastated by the result. He said in the same interview, “Do me a favour, go to Cristiano’s house because he’s dead. I told him I was too (dead), but I went, ‘Get ready, don’t cry and go to Cristiano’s home,’ I said to myself,” he recalled. He also added, “He was in the same mood I was in. We were both devastated.”
