Bumrah Likely to Miss Final Test Against New Zealand in Mumbai

India’s ace pacer, Jasprit Bumrah, is expected to sit out the third and final Test of the series against New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Although Bumrah joined the team for light fitness drills and fielding practice, he notably refrained from bowling during both practice sessions. Sources suggest Bumrah is not carrying an injury; however, whether he’s resting on his request or on the team management’s advice remains unclear.

Head coach Gautam Gambhir dismissed concerns about Bumrah’s absence from bowling, remarking, “He’s done his preparations. Given the weather in Mumbai, conserving energy is key, and Bumrah knows his readiness for the match.”

Having played all four Tests of India’s home season thus far, Bumrah has been a critical asset, delivering 90 overs and claiming 14 wickets. Notably, his recent vice-captaincy appointment signals his essential leadership role for India’s upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia, set to commence on November 18. With regular captain Rohit Sharma expected to miss the initial Test, Bumrah may step up to lead the team.

India’s assistant coach, Abhishek Nayar, emphasized that Bumrah’s workload has been manageable, noting he bowled only 20-25 overs in each of the two previous Tests against New Zealand. Despite two shorter games, Nayar underscored that Bumrah’s workload is monitored closely due to his importance to the team.

The pitch at Wankhede, with its red soil, is expected to favor spinners, with only limited assistance anticipated for fast bowlers during early morning sessions. The Test serves as a “dead rubber,” with India already down 2-0, marking their first home series loss in 12 years. Nevertheless, World Test Championship (WTC) points are still at stake, and India, currently atop the WTC table, is vying for a coveted spot in the final at Lord’s in June 2025.
