Sydney Thunder has officially appointed David Warner as their captain for the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season, following Cricket Australia’s decision to lift his long-standing leadership ban. Warner, who was banned from holding leadership roles in Australian cricket due to his involvement in the 2018 ball-tampering scandal, is now set to lead the Thunder when they open their BBL campaign against Adelaide Strikers on 17 December in Canberra.
Warner’s take on his captaincy return
Warner expressed pride and excitement about his return to leadership, stating, “Captaining the Thunder again this season means a lot to me. Being part of the team from the beginning and now returning as captain feels fantastic. I’m looking forward to leading from the front and guiding our talented young players.”
Warner also emphasized his commitment to mentoring the Thunder’s emerging talent. “One of the most exciting parts of this role is the chance to pass on my experience to the younger players. I want to help them grow so that one day, they can take the reins when I step down,” he added.
Building a legacy for Sydney Thunder
Sydney Thunder’s general manager, Trent Copeland, highlighted the significance of Warner’s captaincy, both for the club and its fans. “This is a huge moment for David and for our club,” Copeland said. “It’s not only about his career; it’s about the legacy he’s creating. For fans in Western Sydney who see him as a Thunder legend, this captaincy symbolizes community, legacy, and the growth of our younger players.”
Warner’s leadership experience
Although Warner hasn’t led an Australian team since 2018, he has continued to captain international franchise teams in the IPL, BPL, and ILT20. Taking over from Chris Green, who led Thunder last season, Warner praised Green and former interim captain Jason Sangha. “I have great respect for Greeny and Jason. They’re exceptional leaders, and I know they’ll be a great support for me this season,” Warner stated.
Warner’s appointment marks a new chapter for Sydney Thunder, as he seeks to build a legacy and guide the team to success in the 2023-24 BBL season.
