Jurgen Klopp paid a heartfelt tribute to Georginio Wijnaldum after he guided Liverpool to Champions League qualifying in his farewell appearance for the club. Wijnaldum’s 2016 move from Newcastle has become a defining moment in Klopp’s career at Anfield, with the Dutch international laying the groundwork for Liverpool’s rise as European and Premier League winners.
The 30-year-old’s contract expires at the end of June, and with no new contract in sight, his time at Anfield appears to be coming to an end. Klopp said that losing the midfielder would be difficult. “Where do I begin?” Klopp made the remarks after Liverpool finished third in the Premier League and qualified for the Champions League with a 2-0 victory against Crystal Palace on the last day of the season.
After the final whistle, an emotional Wijnaldum was given a guard of honour and a major presentation, announcing that he will be seeking to move on as a free agent in the summer, but has sworn to fully explain his choice.
Sadio Mane’s double gave Liverpool a 10-game undefeated run and guaranteed Champions League participation after moving the Reds over Chelsea into the third position in the Premier League. Klopp’s team was seven points short of the top four before their run began, but 26 points from a possible 30 have assured that they will compete in Europe’s highest club tournament again.
