South America’s biggest football event, Copa America which is set to kick off on 13 June with the final scheduled for 10 July was set to be hosted by Argentina and Colombia but after a series of violent protests in Colombia against their president Ivan Duque, Colombia was dropped as a tournament host and Argentina were given the full command.
Colombia had requested CONMEBOL to shift the tournament to later this year but they were denied from this and now Argentina will be hosting the tournament despite a rise in the cases of COVID-19, strict lockdown measures have been imposed in the country last weekend after 35,000 cases emerged in a week with 500 people losing their lives due to this pandemic.
Carla Vizzotti, who is Minister of Health of Argentina has said that we are analysing the situation from the epidemiological point of view. We hope that within nine days, we can contain the curve of increase in cases.
Due to this chaos, United States were also said to host this competition in the summer but after the Minister’s comment, it is certain that the South American country will host the competition for which they are a probable contender under the captaincy of Lionel Messi who is chasing an international trophy with his country.
