6 India made Submarine project worth ₹43,000 crore gets approval as a ‘Make In India’ project

Today the project by Make in India of crafting six conventional submarines which is worth ₹43,000 crore has been cleared by the Defence Acquisition Council that is headed by Rajnath Singh, the Defence Minister of India.

The request for proposal (RFP) for six conventional submarines was approved under the P 75 (1) project under the strategic partnership model. According to the government, this project is the first one under the strategic partnership model thereby making a landmark approval for itself. It is believed that the project will contribute in achieving India’s 30 year submarine construction programme targets.

According to a statement, the project will help India reduce its current dependencies on imports and slowly help enhance self reliance along with dependence on supplies from indigenous sources. The project is also considered to be one of the largest ‘Make in India’ projects as it shall serve faster and evident absorption of technology, creating a tiered industrial ecosystem for making submarines in India.

Many more acquisitions were approved by the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) along with modernization of air defence guns. The government stated that over a dozen Indian companies have expressed their interest and willingness to manufacture the complex gun system the equipment associated with them along with complete assurance of technological assimilation in India. For the same, the Defence Acquisition Council provided an approval for the procurement of air defence guns and ammunitions with a roughly estimated cost of over ₹6,000 crore under the buy and make (Indian) category, as per one of the statements. While it shall take over seven more years for the first submarine to come into service with the Indian Navy.
