After missing a planned work engagement, Nakayama was found in her bathtub on Friday. Her death was confirmed at the spot by paramedics after an acquaintance who was worried about her whereabouts called emergency services.
Investigations are underway to determine the reason for her death. On Friday, Nakayama was supposed to play at a Christmas event in Osaka, but he had to cancel because of health concerns. On her official website, her team confirmed the devastating news of her death and expressed their shock and sadness at the unexpected loss.
The website reads, “We are deeply sorry to have to suddenly announce this to all the people involved who have always looked after her and to all the fans who have supported her, but this incident was so sudden that we, too, are shocked and saddened. We are currently investigating the cause of death and other details.”
Nakayama gained notoriety in the 1980s and 1990s, when J-pop was at its height, but her most well-known performance was perhaps in the 1995 movie “Love Letter.” ‘Tokyo Weather’ (1997) was one of the important films in which she appeared. Nakayama, who was born in Saku, Japan, rose to fame after making her acting debut in the 1985 drama “Maido Osawagase Shimasu.”
In the same year, she also released “C,” her debut song. ‘Be-Bop High School’ starred Nakayama, who went on to release 22 studio albums and achieve eight No. 1 singles in Japan. As a result of her success in music, television, and film, Nakayama rose to become one of Japan’s most adored celebrities.
In addition to winning the Toronto International Film Festival’s audience prize, her work in “Love Letter” earned her Best Actress honours from the Hochi Film Awards and the Blue Ribbon Awards.
