Airtel’s 5G network trial goes live in Gurgaon

As per sources familiar with the matter, Bharti Airtel’s 5G network trial has gone live in the Cyber Hub area of Gurgaon. A 5G network trial will go live in Mumbai in the upcoming days as well.

The site has been operating in the 3500 MHz band and has delivered a throughput of over 1Gbps speed. Airtel has followed all the guidelines of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) required for the trials.

Recently, the DoT had allocated Airtel, Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea (Vi) with 5G trial spectrum in the 700 MHz, 3.5 GHz and 26 GHz bands. They are provided to develop India’s relevant use cases on the next generation fast wireless broadband technology. The role of trial allotments are pivotal for Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel Ltd. since they already have 5G-ready networks. They have bulked up on crucial airwaves in the recent auction to cater the rise in data usage amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Both companies have claimed their end-to-end readiness to launch commercial 5G services in India shortly after the availability of ‘adequate’ spectrum.

Bharti Airtel has been administered the 5G trial spectrum in 3500 MHz, 28 GHz and 700 MHz in Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Kolkata and Bengaluru. Airtel became the first telecommunication company in the country to test 5G over a live network using liberalized spectrum in 1800 MHz band in early 2021.

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) has planned to partner state-run Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT). Airtel and Vi have chosen Finland’s Nokia and Sweden’s Ericsson for the same.
