The masterminds behind Cobra Kai, Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg, recently shared details about an ambitious Back to the Future spinoff pitch they once developed. While the trio meticulously planned the twists and turns leading to Cobra Kai’s grand finale, they also had their eyes on another iconic franchise.
With Cobra Kai Season 6—the epic 15-episode conclusion—now available for streaming on Netflix, the showrunners opened up about an idea that never got off the ground. Their pitch? A Back to the Future reboot set in an alternate 1985.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, their vision included none other than Michael J. Fox as the director, paying homage to the legendary franchise in a way only true fans could imagine.
Interestingly, this wasn’t just a random idea. In Cobra Kai, Schlossberg made a cameo as Terry Silver’s attorney, where he and others played writer-producers discussing an ’80s IP reboot. Hurwitz explained that this scene was inspired by their real-life brainstorming sessions when they first conceived Cobra Kai.
“But in this case, we were discussing a spinoff series of Back to the Future,” Hurwitz revealed.
Despite their passion for the idea, the Cobra Kai creators acknowledged the significant roadblock: Back to the Future’s original creators, Bob Gale and Bob Zemeckis, have consistently opposed any continuation of the franchise.
Hurwitz admitted, “We know this will almost certainly never happen, given Bob Zemeckis and Bob Gale’s stance against new Back to the Future projects.” However, he playfully added, “That being said, if they happen to watch the final episode of Cobra Kai and want to hear more, that’s the start of our pitch.”
While a Back to the Future spinoff remains a dream, Cobra Kai has cemented its place in pop culture history. All six seasons are now streaming on Netflix, offering fans an action-packed conclusion to the Karate Kid saga.
