Ariana Grande said she’s open to performing at the Oscars

Just hours after Wicked made a big splash by being mentioned multiple times in the shortlists for the 79th Academy Awards, Ariana Grande, one of its stars, revealed she would be up for performing at the ceremony.

Grande, who plays Glinda in the upcoming Wicked movie, shared her excitement about the possibility of singing at the Oscars while attending a luncheon for first-time Golden Globe nominees. At the event, which celebrated her nomination for her role in Wicked, she told reporters that she would happily sing alongside her co-star, Cynthia Erivo, anywhere, anytime—including the Oscars.

She expressed her enthusiasm to The Hollywood Reporter, saying, “I’ll sing together absolutely anywhere anytime, especially in celebration of Wicked.” She added that she and Erivo are close friends, calling her “my sister,” and that they would jump at the chance to perform together. This would certainly be a thrilling moment for fans, especially considering how much the world has anticipated seeing Wicked come to life on the big screen. However, there’s a bit of a snag: most of the songs performed during the Oscars are those nominated for Best Original Song, but since the Wicked movie uses songs from the original Broadway musical, none of them are technically original for the movie.

That said, given Grande’s massive star power and the strong buzz surrounding Wicked as a potential nominee, the Academy could make an exception to allow her and Erivo to perform. It would be a show-stopping moment to see the two of them perform hits like “Defying Gravity” or “Popular,” and with the magic of Wicked, you could bet there’d be plenty of special effects like flying brooms and floating bubbles.

Last year, Grande and Erivo even presented the award for Best Original Song at the Oscars, where Billie Eilish won for her track from Barbie. While Grande’s chances of performing might seem slim since Wicked’s songs aren’t eligible for Best Original Song, she’s still a strong contender in the Best Supporting Actress category. Both she and Erivo have been nominated for their roles in Wicked at both the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards, increasing the possibility of an Oscar nomination. Grande has been mixing with other top contenders, including stars like Zoe Saldaña and Dakota Fanning, at major events like the Golden Globes first-time nominee luncheon.

In other fun news, Grande also met Kathryn Hahn, who earned a Golden Globe nomination for her role as a witch in Agatha All Along. If Grande doesn’t get to perform at the Oscars, let’s just say there might be a little magic involved to make sure she doesn’t miss out on that golden moment!
