Arsenal set to offer new deal to Kieran Tierney

Arsenal have opened talks with Kieran Tierney for a contract extension.

The Scotland international joined the Gunners in a £25m deal two years ago and has established himself as one of Europe’s best left-backs, despite a series of injuries. The 24-year-old made 27 Premier League appearances for the Gunners last season and was one of the positives as Mikel Arteta’s side finished eighth in the league.

Tierney still has three years remaining on his current deal, but by offering a new deal Arsenal are keen to show his current standing in the squad. Arteta has been full of praise for the Scottish left-back and he has hinted at Tierney having captain material for Arsenal, ‘I think he can be Arsenal captain as he has the respect and admiration of every member of the staff and every player.’

Arsenal are also searching the market for a backup left-back. The club is keen to sign a player of a younger profile with Hibernian’s Josh Doig and Crystal Palace’s Tyrick Mitchell rumoured to be among the targets being considered.

Head of football operations Richard Garlick is leading contract negotiations for all first-team players, and the former Premier League Director of Football will also be tasked with the same brief for all new signings.
