The Border Security Force (BSF) Meghalaya Frontier has claimed significant operational gains in the second quarter of 2025, arresting 150 people and seizing items and livestock valued at over ₹7.5 crore as part of a crackdown on infiltration and smuggling along the Indo-Bangladesh border.
BSF Meghalaya carried out 33 significant operations between April 25 and July 25, apprehending 34 Indian and 116 Bangladeshi nationals engaged in unlawful cross-border activity. Four of them, two Indian and two Bangladeshi, were accused of assisting smuggling routes and infiltration.
According to police, the catch, which includes an astounding 622 cattle, contraband including Yaba pills, hashish, alcohol, clothing, and a shipment of mobile display units valued at over ₹31 lakh, reflects a new trend in cross-border smuggling. The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the BSF in Meghalaya stated, “These successful interceptions are the result of sustained intelligence-based operations and seamless coordination with Meghalaya Police.”
He also added, “Our troops remain vigilant and committed to neutralising the evolving tactics of trans-border syndicates.” Along with its security responsibilities, the BSF emphasised its humanitarian function. During this time, troops responded quickly to a number of emergency circumstances, such as the rescue of seven injured civilians following a truck accident near BOP Phanda and the emergency evacuation of a woman, Berlin Tariang, from Umkiang to Silchar for intensive medical care.
While promising that “BSF Meghalaya remains people-centric in approach while being firm on national security,” the PRO stated, “We take pride in being not just guardians of the border but also first responders for the people living in these remote and vulnerable areas.”
Interrogations of the apprehended infiltrators and touts have yielded crucial intelligence, which the BSF claims has been disseminated to other law enforcement organisations to help combat organised transnational crime networks. The Force has also increased field-level coordination with Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) as part of its larger goal to improve mutual confidence and handle common security issues, such as locating criminal hotspots and susceptible routes.
The PRO reaffirmed, “BSF Meghalaya will continue to adapt, respond, and safeguard both the nation’s borders and its people: our zero-tolerance approach to infiltration and smuggling is unwavering.” Combining technology, intelligence, and compassion in its frontline role, BSF Meghalaya stays ahead of the curve in the face of changing smuggling patterns and persistent infiltration attempts.
