Dhurandhar: The Revenge became the highest-grossing Indian film of all time in Australia in just ten days after its debut. The Ranveer Singh-starrer grossed AUD 568K on its second Saturday, bringing its total to AUD 5.99 million, surpassing the lifetime gross of its predecessor Dhurandhar (AUD 5.60 million). Today, the picture broke a new record for Indian cinema by crossing AUD 6 million, and it will be more than AUD 6.40 million by EOD.
With the second weekend bringing in approximately AUD 1.40 million, there is still substantial momentum in the run. The film will profit from the Easter holiday week, however it will have competition from Hollywood blockbusters. Even so, the film is on track to easily surpass AUD 7 million and has a good chance of surpassing AUD 8 million by the end of its run.
In comparison, that would be over 40% higher than the previous all-time record and nearly 60% higher than the best-performing non-Dhurandhar title, Animal. Even though the Australian market has seen rapid post-pandemic development for Indian films, the manner in which Dhurandhar: The Revenge has smashed established benchmarks is just astounding.
Examining part of the history of Indian cinema in Australia. 3 Idiots (AUD 1.13 million) was the first to reach AUD 1 million in 2009. Following that, the top grossers were primarily Aamir Khan films, including Dhoom 3 (AUD 1.75 million), PK (AUD 2.11 million), and Dangal (AUD 2.62 million).
Baahubali 2 grossed an impressive AUD 4.40 million in 2017, aided by exorbitant ticket costs. Things slowed somewhat in the late 2010s, but there was a large surge in 2022, following the epidemic, and now Dhurandhar: The Revenge is likely demonstrating the potential out there.
