Emmy Awards draw record-low ratings with 4.3 million viewers

The Emmy Awards ceremony on Fox drew a record-low 4.3 million viewers, maintaining the show’s long-term trend of diminishing ratings.

The Nielsen company claimed on Tuesday that the Monday night ceremony hosted by Anthony Anderson, with “Succession” and “The Bear” winning the majority of the top awards, was down from the previous record low of 5.9 million for NBC’s telecast in 2022 when the event was last held.

The Emmy this year faced several challenges. They had to postpone it four months from its usual September date due to Hollywood’s writers and actors strikes, and they had to compete with both an NFL playoff game and coverage of the Iowa caucuses in the presidential campaign.

Less than half as many people watched the Golden Globes show on CBS eight days earlier. With 9.4 million viewers, the show honoured both TV and film and had bigger stars like Taylor Swift.

With no in-person audience and remote nominees, the 2020 ABC Emmys hit a record low with 6.1 million viewers during the peak of the pandemic. However, the ceremony rebounded the next year with 7.4 million viewers for CBS.

The Emmys last had more than 10 million viewers in 2018, when they garnered 10.2 million. The show garnered 21.8 million viewers in 2000, a figure it’s unlikely to match again.
