Everything you need to know about Disney’s Jasmine and Aladdin age controversy

It’s common on the internet to discuss how Disney princess movies haven’t aged properly. Many of the female characters are powerless and simply want to marry a man. Princess Jasmine from 1992’s “Aladdin” opposes some of the most harmful trends, openly opposing young marriage. However, there are still some dicey details about the character, particularly when asked, “How old is Jasmine from ‘Aladdin?'”

Jasmine’s age is never directly mentioned in the film, although a Disney webpage that has since been archived lists how she must choose a husband before her 16th birthday, implying she would be 15 for most of “Aladdin.” This becomes a problem since most websites show Aladdin’s age as 18, implying he’s attempting to get with a minor. Another problem comes toward the end of the movie when Jafar gains Genie’s powers and dresses Jasmine in a scantily clad outfit. Not only that, but Jasmine kisses Jafar to distract him, despite the fact that he is much older than she is.

The 2019 live-action movie attempts to avoid this problem by ageing the actors. While their ages aren’t mentioned, Mena Massoud, who portrays Aladdin, was 27 when the film was released and Naomi Scott, who portrays Jasmine, was 26. With this, they may both be in their late teens or early twenties. While marrying a 15- or 16-year-old girl is frowned upon in the Western world, it is more common in other cultures.
