An anti-graft court in Islamabad sentenced former Pakistani PM Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi to 14 years in prison in the Toshakhana case, according to a report published by Geo News on Wednesday. Bushra Bibi was notified by Khan’s legal team that she would surrender at the jail following the sentence.
Khan’s media team expressed concern about the independence of the country’s judicial system, stating, “Another sad day in our judicial system history, which is being dismantled.”
“No cross questioning allowed, no final argument concluded and decision pops up like a pre-determined process in play,” the team claimed further adding, “This ridiculous decision will also be challenged.”
The sentence came just one day after Khan was sentenced to 10 years in jail for revealing state secrets in another case and just a week before national elections.
The charge states that Khan “deliberately concealed” information about the gifts he retained from the Toshaskhana, a repository where gifts given to government officials by foreign officials are kept, throughout his time as prime minister, as well as the revenues from their reported sales.
