Harvey Weinstein, who is to face sexual assault and rape charges in Los Angeles, has been approved by the New York judge to be extradited to California, rejecting the producer’s last hopes and efforts to stall and avoid the transfer. According to reports, Weinstein is most likely to be transferred from Upstate New York City to Los Angeles in July.
Norman Effman, who represents Weinstein serving as his attorney, stated that he would be appealing the decision. The attorney had asked for a stay that would essentially block the order from taking place pending the appeal, saying that the paperwork was not proper and also that it was a legal technicality that should be based on due process. He also mentioned that Weinstein would not be able to receive adequate treatment in Los Angeles. but was denied by the court after the argument from the State Prosecutor was presented.
Weinstein attended the hearing virtually from the Wende Correctional Facility, the place where he is serving a 23-year-sentence for various charges and is also receiving treatment for a long list of ailments. The producer wore a red shirt and a walker was also spotted be at his side. After the judge stated his ruling, Weinstein was seen holding his head in his hands.
Harvey Weinstein, the producer who is 69 years old, faces eleven charges of sexual assault in Los Angeles which involve five women. If he is convicted, he will be facing up to an additional 140 years in prison. His extradition had been repeatedly delayed due to the existing COVID-19 protocols in the judicial system.
