Actor Bhagyashree has shared fresh insights into how pay structures work in Bollywood, recalling the surprising salary difference between her and Salman Khan during the making of the 1989 blockbuster Maine Pyar Kiya.
Directed by Sooraj Barjatya, the romantic drama became one of the biggest hits of its time and turned both lead actors into overnight stars. While the film marked Bhagyashree’s Bollywood debut, Salman Khan had already appeared in Biwi Ho To Aisi before landing the iconic role. Despite Salman having prior screen experience, reports around the film’s release had claimed that Bhagyashree received a significantly higher remuneration.
Speaking recently to Zoom, Bhagyashree explained that film payments are often determined less by gender and more by market dynamics, negotiation, and perceived value. According to the actor, producers approach casting decisions from a business perspective and are always looking at what an actor brings to the table compared to the price being quoted.
She also pointed out that the entertainment industry functions in a highly competitive environment where compromises are common. Bhagyashree said there is almost always someone willing to accept lower fees, longer schedules, or different working conditions, making remuneration a constantly shifting equation.
The actor further compared the process to consumer choices in everyday life, explaining that people are often willing to pay extra for added value or comfort. She added that professional relationships and ease of collaboration also influence decisions beyond just monetary figures. Released in 1989, Maine Pyar Kiya remains one of Bollywood’s most celebrated romantic films.
