1. A dropout from high school. Mary was unable to finish her high school graduation due to a lack of interest in studying. When she was in class 7 at St Xavier’s School, she decided to leave to devote more time to boxing. Later on, she went on-to take her final exams in private and even finish her graduation from Churachadpur College in private.

2. After college, she began boxing. She just took boxing seriously after college. Mary Kom was inspired by Dingko Singh’s victory in the 1997 Asian Games, where he won a gold medal.

3.Initially, her family members were against it. Her first challenge came from none other than her own orthodox family, who were opposed to their daughter participating in an “unorthodox sport” because it was not considered a “women’s game.” Her father, who used to work as a poor landless farmer, scolded her vehemently when news of her first win appeared in the local newspaper.

4. Her first tournament resulted in a silver medal. She made her debut in the 2001 Women’s World Amateur Boxing Championship in Pennsylvania, USA, where she earned a silver medal.
