Flash flood near Gangotri triggers panic in Uttarakhand village; locals fear over 20 hotels washed away

In Uttarakhand’s Dharali village near Gangotri, residents worry that a flash flood caused by a cloudburst on Tuesday has destroyed more than 20 hotels and homestays. A number of films captured the disaster in the Himalayan valley near Harsil in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, demonstrating the extent of the destruction.

The local creek that empties into the Bhagirathi river was the site of the cloudburst. Local resident Rajesh Panwar told PTI that at least ten people were trapped beneath the rubble, and that 20 to 25 hotels and homestays might have been washed away as well.

On the route to Gangotri, the location where Bhagirathi, the source stream of the sacred Ganga, originates, pilgrims make Dharali one of their final stops. In this area of the Garhwal region, a number of villages, notably Dharali, are well-liked by tourists due to their scenic beauty.

Houses, stores, homestays, and hotels were all destroyed by the flash flood, which occurred Tuesday at approximately 1:40 pm and brought a violent wave of rocks, rubble, and muck racing over the neighborhood. Officials and witnesses compared the situation to the Chamoli catastrophe of 2021, which claimed over 200 lives. At least four fatalities have been reported thus far, but the number could increase.
