French Open: Novak Djokovic beats Casper Ruud to claim record 23rd Grand Slam title

On Sunday (June 11), Serbia’s Novak Djokovic defeated Norway’s Casper Ruud in straight sets to win a record-breaking 23rd Grand Slam at the French Open 2023 in Paris. Djokovic won the final at Roland Garros 7-6 (1), 6-3, 7-5 and will now reclaim his world number one position for the record 388th week.

This is Djokovic’s 3rd Roland Garros triumph, he had previously won in Paris twice before his win on Sunday. Djokovic was ranked 3rd in the world before heading into this competition, but he is now ranked 1st again and he is nearly certain to divide tennis fans on the Greatest Of All Time (GOAT) debate after adding another major championship to his long list of achievements.

Ruud, on the other hand, gave his veteran opponent a tough fight, sending the opening set into a decider. But Djokovic proved to be too challenging as an opponent for him at Roland Garros, as the Serb demonstrated his class yet again on a big day, not giving an inch to his opponent, showing his determination for a win. Djokovic now has at least three Grand Slam victories in each of the four Grand Slams, an incredible achievement that speaks everything about his consistency and desire to perform year after year.
