Gini Wijnaldum is set to sign for Barcelona on a free transfer

Georginio Wijnaldum is ready to leave Liverpool at the end of his five-year deal. According to rumours, he is expected to sign a three-year contract with Barcelona. Humphry Nijman, Wijnaldum’s agent, was seen leaving the Nou Camp offices on Tuesday morning. The Holland international will depart Liverpool when his contract expires this summer.

Bayern Munich has been connected with Wijnaldum in the previous 24 hours, but transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has tweeted that the player would instead join Barcelona.

Romano wrote: “Gini Wijnaldum is set to join Barcelona as a free agent until June 2024 – there’s nothing agreed with FC Bayern, he wants to sign for Barca. Last details and… here we go soon!”

Wijnaldum, who joined Liverpool from Newcastle in July 2016 and has made 237 appearances, won the Champions League and Premier League in successive seasons during his time at Anfield.

“I hoped to play many more years for the club but unfortunately things went different, I think everyone knows in football that anything can happen but the situation right now is that on July 1 I’m not a Liverpool player anymore,” Wijnaldum said after Liverpool’s win against Crystal Palace secured Champions League qualification.

Wijnaldum played his farewell game for Liverpool in the Reds’ 2-0 win over Crystal Palace at Anfield on Sunday. He was given a hero’s send-off after helping the club win the Champions League and Premier League in recent seasons.
