Grammy Awards 2024: Shankar Mahadevan, Zakir Hussain’s Shakti wins Best Global Music Album

At the Grammy Awards, held on February 5 at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, the fusion band Shakti, which featured violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan, drummer V Selvaganesh, vocalist Shankar Mahadevan, John McLaughlin, and Zakir Hussain, won the Global Music Album.

Shakti, the reassembled international fusion band, has won the prestigious award of Best Global Music Album for their most recent album, ‘This Moment’. This is a special landmark because it is the group’s first new album in more than 45 years. The album includes eight new compositions by the exceptional lineup of John McLaughlin (guitar, guitar synth), Zakir Hussain (tabla), Shankar Mahadevan (singer), V Selvaganesh (percussionist) and Ganesh Rajagopalan (violinist).

In an acceptance speech, Mahadevan stated, “Thank you boys. Thank you God, family, friends, and India. India, we are proud of you…Last but not the least, I would like to dedicate this award to my wife whom every note of my music is dedicated to.”

Shakti won the Grammy for Best Global Music Album, beating out artists including Susana Baca, Bokante, Burna Boy and Davido. This win shows their current impact and global recognition for their unique musical fusion.

The 66th Grammy Awards 2024 were held in Los Angeles.
