In around six months, a low cost charging system for two and three wheeler vehicles is expected to hit the Indian market which may prove to be a turning point for electric mobility in India.
The sales of two and three wheeler vehicle is around 80 percent in the country which results to be a major source of vehicular emissions. The adoption of electric mobility in the genre might be much faster if a low cost and comfortable charging system was made available, as said by the government officials.
The price for the new charging system could be quoted at ₹3,500 while the existing solutions for charging cost around ₹15,000-₹20,000. The new developed charging system is a government industry partnership for which a prototype has been constructed with at least half a dozen companies currently working to manufacture it on scale.
The initiative led by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) has given the result of this new system to the office of principal scientific advisor to the government and industry and research group. With an access to a 220 volt, 15 ampere power line, the all weather charging device can fit in any place. Along with small coffee shops and kirana outlets as ideal spots, it can easily fit in parking lots of metro and railway stations, shopping malls, hospitals, office complexes and apartments.
A charger along with a smart electric socket with the capability of communicating with a mobile phone and some mobile applications with the provision to make payments is needed by the charging system to function well.
