Indian director Soham Shah sues Netflix for copying his movie in Squid Games

Indian director Soham Shah has filed a lawsuit against Squid Game and Netflix, claiming that the streaming service had copied his 2009 film for its popular series. On Friday, Shah filed the case in federal court in New York, alleging that the television program is a “blatant rip-off” of his Hindi-language film Luck.

In his picture, a group of impoverished and desperate people are enticed into competitive games by the prospect of large financial awards, only to find out that losing means certain death. This legal action is being taken as Netflix gets ready to launch Squid Game’s second season later this year. According to Shah, the protagonists in Luck were Imran Khan, Sanjay Dutt, and Shruti Haasan. They don’t understand until after they begin competing that losing a challenge results in death and that a contestant’s passing increases the reward pool for the remaining competitors. According to Shah, the plots of Luck and the 2021 television series Squid Game are very similar.

He notes that the Luck movie’s plot was conceived in 2006, and it was released worldwide in 2009. Shah adds that Netflix’s substantial marketing and advertising allowed it access to Luck. The lawsuit also highlights Hwang Dong Hyuk, the creator of Squid Game, claiming to have created the series in the same year that Luck was launched, casting doubt on Netflix’s program’s originality.

The complaint also emphasises how Squid Game has increased Netflix’s market value, which is supposedly worth 900 million USD significantly. In addition to requesting payment, Soham Shah wants to stop Netflix from violating his copyright in the future. However, Netflix has not yet responded to his allegations or the complaint.

The streaming service shocked fans by revealing the release date for Squid Game Season 3 in addition to the Season 2 release date. Even before the second season debuted, the statement disclosed the release date for the last season. The caption said, “The real game begins.” On December 26, Squid Game’s second season will launch only on Netflix. In 2025, the final season will air.
