IndiGo ropes in former Air India Express chief for strategy role

On Monday, IndiGo announced the appointment of Aloke Singh, former CEO of Air India Express, as chief strategy officer.

“In this role, Mr Singh will lead the Company’s long-term strategic planning function and drive enterprise-wide transformation initiatives focused on accelerating growth, enhancing operational efficiency and strengthening competitive positioning in a rapidly evolving global aviation landscape,” according to an IndiGo release.

“He will partner closely with the leadership team on cross-functional priorities designed to improve agility, elevate customer experience and deliver sustainable shareholder value,” according to the statement.

Singh has almost three decades of experience in the aviation business, including strategy, planning, operations, and commercial activities, as well as leading operational and cultural transformation initiatives, according to the airline. Before joining Air India Express, Singh had high executive positions at Air India and Oman Air, including one in strategy.

IndiGo managing director Rahul Bhatia stated, “Aloke brings an exceptional blend of strategic vision and operational depth.” His extensive knowledge of the aviation ecosystem will be crucial as we develop a more agile, resilient, and future-ready organization and expedite our next phase of expansion. Aloke will now report to me. Once the next CEO takes office, he will report to the new Chief Executive.”

Singh commented on his hiring, saying, “I am delighted to join IndiGo at such a watershed moment for the airline and Indian aviation in general.” IndiGo, which has transformed India’s domestic and short-haul international aviation environment, is expanding its goals globally. I am excited to collaborate with colleagues across the organization to refine our strategic direction, double down on operational excellence, and deepen and broaden our markets.”

Singh’s appointment comes after the airline’s CEO Pieter Elbers abruptly resigned on March 10, following criticism in December 2025 for failing to implement mandatory flight duty time limitations (FDTL) norms, resulting in the cancellation of at least 5,500 flights in the first half of the month.
