Instagram expands teen accounts inspired by 13+ content ratings

Instagram has announced the global expansion of its 13+ content rating and Limited Content setting for teen accounts, following its introduction in the UK, US, Australia, and Canada in October 2025. This update means that teens will typically see content on Instagram similar to what is seen in a movie rated for ages 13+. Teens under 18 will automatically be placed in this updated 13+ setting and will require parental permission to opt out.

While teens might encounter some suggestive content or strong language akin to a 13+ movie, Instagram aims to minimize these instances. The company acknowledges that no system is flawless but is committed to ongoing improvements. This update is intended to assure parents that Instagram is dedicated to providing safe, age-appropriate content for teens by default while giving parents more control over their teens’ experiences.

The update involves refining content policies for teens, inspired by movie rating criteria and parent feedback. Teen accounts were originally designed to shield teens from inappropriate content, and Instagram has further refined its guidelines to exclude more potentially inappropriate content in the 13+ setting.

Instagram has aligned its policies with independent standards familiar to parents, reviewing its guidelines against 13+ movie ratings. Although differences exist between movies and social media, the changes aim to make the teen experience on Instagram comparable to watching a 13+ rated movie.

Existing policies already filter out sexually suggestive content, graphic images, and adult content like tobacco or alcohol sales. The updated policies extend this to include strong language, risky stunts, and content encouraging harmful behaviors, such as posts featuring marijuana paraphernalia.

Instagram has enhanced its technology to proactively identify content that violates the updated guidelines, applying these improvements across the platform. Teens will be restricted from following accounts that regularly share inappropriate content or have suggestive names or bios. If teens already follow such accounts, they will lose the ability to interact with them or see their content. These accounts will also be unable to follow or interact with teens.

Search capabilities will be limited for teens, blocking results for mature terms like ‘alcohol’ or ‘gore,’ even if misspelled. Teens will not see content against the guidelines in recommendations, feeds, or stories, even if shared by someone they follow. Direct messages containing such content will also be inaccessible.

Instagram has updated its AI to ensure it does not provide age-inappropriate responses, aligning with 13+ movie ratings.

For parents seeking additional control, Instagram is introducing a new ‘Limited Content’ setting. This stricter setting filters even more content from the teen experience and restricts teens from seeing, leaving, or receiving comments on posts.
