The situation in India is grim as the second wave of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has caused a medical emergency in the country.
So far, several players have withdrawn from the coveted league. Anrich Nortje withdrew earlier due to a false positive scenario, while others, such as Ravichandran Ashwin, dropped out to support his family. Australian cricketers such as Andrew Tye, Adam Zampa, and Kane Richardson also flew back home as the country’s cases became more concerning.
#CancelIPL trended on Twitter shortly after two Kolkata Knight Riders players and three Chennai Super Kings players tested positive for COVID-19. The KKR squad’s spinner Varun Chakravarthy and fast bowler Sandeep Warier tested positive for the virus, forcing the team’s match against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to be postponed.
During the chaos, many notable figures and fans believe that holding the tournament in such a dire situation is wrong. Many people urged the BCCI to postpone the league so that the players’ and other members’ health would not be jeopardised.
While not a major issue at the moment, any further increase in the number of cases could force the BCCI to postpone more than one match.
Here’s some reactions of fans on twitter:
