IPL 2021: KKR finally break their losing streak by defeating Punjab Kings by five wickets

Kolkata Night Riders claims a victory after four consecutive defeats in the IPL 2021 as they defeated Punjab Kings by five wickets.

This tournament has so far been a roller coaster ride for the Kolkata Knight Riders along with some nail-biting ends not favouring the team. However, Morgan and his boys kept it tight against the Punjab Kings since the toss.

KKR won the toss and decided to field first, and henceforth took all the advantages from the start. They choked Punjab in the powerplay with Cummins giving the breakthrough departing KL Rahul for just 19 off 20 deliveries. It was the very next over when Shivam Mavi took the edge off Gayle’s bat sending him home for a golden duck. Mavi bowled a super-economical spell giving away just 13 runs at an economy of 3. 20. Mavi was accompanied by Varun Chakravarthy for his one wicket and just 24 runs.

KKR’s Sunil Narine was back in action today with the ball. He first dismissed the set opener Mayank Agarwal (31) and then bowled the dangerous Moises Henriques scoring nothing but just two runs. Young gun Prashid celebrated his inning with three wickets including Deepak Hooda (1), power-hitter Shahrukh Khan (13) and Chris Jordan (30) who battered Krishna with two sixes before getting out.

However, Punjab didn’t lose hope and tried retaliating with a bang which they actually delivered in the powerplay. Kolkata lost three of their top order in the first three overs of the powerplay.

While Shubhman Gill went back scoring just nine runs, Opener Nitish Rana and all-rounder Sunil Narine walked in blot scoring none. By this KKR were dominated by a downfall of 17 for three. However, KKR skipper Eoin Morgan and youngster Rahul Tripathi took responsibilities in hand and constructed a well-built partnership.

Morgan stood till the last scoring 47 not out after KKR lost Tripathi who played a well-constructed inning of 41 off 32 and Russell, who went back due to a stunning run-out by Arshdeep Singh.

However, Dinesh Karthik finished off things In the seventeenth over by hitting two consecutive boundaries. With this epic win, the Kolkata Knight Riders directly took a huge leap from the last spot to the fifth in the points table after losing four comprehensive matches.

KKR skipper Eoin Morgan, who faced a lot of allegations and controversy after losing their last match showcased his concern towards his team and their hard work as well.

“Wins haven’t been easy to come by. We have worked incredibly hard. Today, along with a bit of luck, the performance was very impressive, particularly with the ball up front”, Morgan said.
